PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (PdP)

PdP is a course started twenty-two years ago at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland. It is currently coordinated by Aalto Design  Factory  (http://pdp.fi) along with partners from all over the world. The previous edition (2018/2019) involved universities from Poland, USA, Australia, Brazil, Estonia, India, Korea, Latvia and Portugal.  PdP is aimed at students of engineering, industrial design and business schools, though the students from other fields can also be participants. The course is based on innovative learning methodologies, such as problem-based learning and design thinking. Design challenges are commissioned by business partners. The project usually includes the following phases: planning, research, concept creation, decision-making, computer-assisted design and development, prototyping and assembly and testing. The result of the project is a fully functional prototype of a product. The prototyping, assembly and testing phases are strongly linked to practical learning experience. An important premise of the PdP program is that the project teams are international, they are created in cooperation between the University of Aalto and the remote university (in this case - Warsaw University of Technology). As a result of such a combination, the team members are at least of 2 nationalities, and in practice, due to the extensive cooperation of Aalto University with other universities from around the world, the number of nationalities is greater. In addition, it is assumed that the selected graduates of the course supervise and provide their experience for the participants of subsequent editions of the course. The activities take place in cooperation with the socio-economic environment, thus forming part of the so-called third mission of the university and are part of the university's long-term strategy to support students in acquiring the relevant competences.
