Warsaw University of Technology Celebration

Warsaw University of Technology Celebration

Traditionally, 15 November is celebrated as Warsaw University of Technology Day. This date is a reminder of the events of 1915, when the first academic year at our University with Polish as the language of instruction was inaugurated.

Interestingly, the ceremony took place not in the Main Building, but in the Physics Auditorium. Zygmunt Straszewicz became the first Rector. At that time, the studies lasted four years and the recruitment process was based on passing examinations. After the first ones, 613 people were admitted, including 14 women.

Awards and commemorations

As every year, we commemorate the events of 1915 in a special way. On 15 November at 10.00 a.m., a formal meeting of the Senate of the Warsaw University of Technology will be held in the Small Hall of the Main Building. During the event, the Rector of the Warsaw University of Technology, Krzysztof Zaremba, Prof., will deliver a speech. Medals of the Commission of National Education, diplomas of Professor Emeritus of the Warsaw University of Technology and prizes in the Competition for the Jan Czochralski, Prof., Award will be awarded. The winner of the Young Scientist Medal will also be announced.

In the afternoon, the roll call of the fallen will take place at 3 p.m. in the Large Hall. Afterwards, the university delegation will place flowers under the plaques commemorating the participation of PW people in the fight for a free and independent Poland.

At 5 p.m., the Golden Book Gala will begin in the Small Hall. There, we will honour PW graduates who can boast of outstanding professional achievements - they will receive diplomas and Golden Book statuettes.

Exhibitions

From 15 to 22 November, a unique exhibition will be on display in the temporary exhibition hall of the PW Museum at 22 Nowowiejska Street - a collection of congratulatory letters received by the Rector of PW in 1915. Congratulations were sent by schools, societies and institutions. These letters are true works of art, executed with extraordinary craftsmanship, perfectly reflecting the importance of the event that was the opening of the University. In the Large Hall of the Main Building of the Warsaw University of Technology, the permanent exhibition features, among others, copies of congratulatory letters, medals minted on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Renewal of Tradition in 2015 and souvenirs of the opening of the Warsaw University of Technology and the University of Warsaw in November 1915.

Concert

Rounding off this year's celebration of Warsaw University of Technology will be the 134th ‘Great Music in a Small Hall’ concert - on 16 November at 6 p.m., Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor will be performed in the Large Hall.
